South Korea's semiconductor industry seeks change, memory manufacturers increase logic chip layout

Phát hành vào : 16 thg 5, 2019

Hyflux intends to acquire MagnaChip Korea's Cheongju Plant. If the deal comes true, MagiChip can also increase its own 8-inch wafer manufacturing strength and increase its importance in the 8-inch wafer foundry market. This fund will continue to develop new technologies and even transform into semiconductor design manufacturers focused on chip design and development capabilities.

Memory manufacturers increase logic chip layout

The global semiconductor industry is changing rapidly. The largest memory product in semiconductor applications has experienced a decline in the past few years and then fell back in 2019. In the Korean semiconductor industry, the importance of its memory products is self-evident. It is believed that it will be hit by 2019, so Korean memory manufacturers have successively proposed policies related to logic chips.

After Hynix’s intention to launch the MagnaChip plant, Samsung also deliberately announced that the Group will invest 133 trillion won in System LSI and foundry business in the near future, and plans to become the leader in the logic chip field in 2030.

It is not difficult to imagine that the Korean semiconductor industry is overly dependent on the issue of memory products, and will continue to be brought to the attention of the industry, even the national government, in 2019.

MagnaChip or future professional chip design vendor

MagnaChip first moved the LCD display driver chip business in 2018, from Display-SPG (Standard Product Group) to FSG (Foundry Service Group), and announced in February 2019 that it would "strategize" for FSG. Sexual evolution.

In fact, thanks to the increasing demand for global power-related semiconductors and the rapid growth in demand for AMOLED panel display driver chips, MagnaChip's emphasis on this two product lines has naturally increased.

Since MagnaChip's manufacturing process still occupies an 8-inch node, MagnaChip can only look for other 12-inch wafer manufacturers for its OEM as the two product lines move toward the 12-inch manufacturing process.

In addition, Fab 4 Qingzhou Plant accounts for about 70% of MagnaChip's total capacity. If MagnaChip really plans to dispose of Fab 4 Cheong Chau and FSG in the future, it is speculated that MagnaChip is in the direction of convergence and re-allocation of resources, focusing on chip development and design capabilities. Upgrade and move in the direction of Fabless semiconductor manufacturers.
