EDR first attracted attention in China on September 29, 2017, when the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the National Standards Committee jointly issued GB7258-2017 "Technical Conditions for Safety in Motor Vehicle Operation". This standard, which replaces GB7258-2012 "Safety Technical Conditions for Motor Vehicle Operation", mentioned in the specific content that all passenger cars, dangerous goods transport trucks, semi-trailer tractors and other trucks with a total mass greater than or equal to 12000kg should be equipped with records and storage , Display, print or output vehicle driving status information such as vehicle speed, time, mileage and other driving recorder. Among them, other passenger cars with a length of less than 6m are equipped with an event data recording system (EDR) that meets the requirements of the standard.

To focus, EDR needs to be able to record data information such as vehicle speed and braking status when specific events such as collisions occur.

Why has the EDR mentioned in 2017 only started to form a hot concept stock? This has a lot to do with the revision of GB7258-2017 "Technical Conditions for Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation". As shown in the figure below, it is mentioned in the standard No. 2 amendment that passenger cars should be equipped with an event data recording system (EDR) that complies with GB39732. The new regulations will be implemented on new cars on January 1, 2022.

Many countries have begun to implement EDR, such as Japan. At the beginning of 2018, according to Japanese media reports, the Japanese government began planning to popularize the "black box" of automobiles. The original intention of the Japanese government was that cars with ever-increasing electronic equipment could be equipped with a driving recorder like a commercial airliner, so that after an accident, the responsibilities of each party can be clarified through the data in the "black box." According to the plan of the Japanese government at the time, this plan was submitted at a working group meeting of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan on January 26, 2018. The fastest plan is to integrate into the Japanese government's regulatory framework for the development of autonomous vehicles in mid-2018. middle.

In fact, national regulatory agencies wishing to promote EDR all hope that there is a device that can go further than the existing driving recorder, access signals such as vehicle speed and braking from the data source, set vehicle parameters and configure driver identification. Card. It is also required in related regulations that the data interface should be easy to plug and unplug the removable storage medium.

With the improvement of automobile intelligence and electrification, several major global automobile markets currently have the meaning of compulsory popularization of EDR. Among them, the United States began to make EDR requirements for vehicles sold in 2014; South Korea in 2015 Started to compulsory installation of EDR on vehicles sold on the market; Japan included EDR in the regulatory framework for the development of autonomous vehicles in 2018; China and Europe both plan to implement mandatory EDR plans in the first half of 2022.

Indeed, the industry has been paying attention to the implementation of the domestic EDR policy. According to reports, Tesla has been equipped with EDR in all its systems and has responded very quickly to the policy. In the previous Tesla "brake door" incident that was watched across the country, Tesla also published an EDR data sheet involving time, vehicle speed, main pump pressure, ABS signal, steering wheel angle, collision signal and many other data. Although some companies believe that there are many important data missing, they can still see important information such as normal ABS, normal AEB, and normal anti-collision.

In the first half of this year, Tesla also launched the official website of edr.tesla.com. Tesla mentioned in the page information that only a Windows computer, appropriate cables and adapters, Tesla EDR retrieval program and a MyTesla account are required to access EDR data from Tesla vehicles. Related software and hardware programs can be found on the page, and Tesla can also help users generate related reports from the downloaded data.

According to reports, the current domestic new car-making forces basically have standard EDR or compliant driving record systems in related models. For example, BYD Han EV, Xiaopeng G3 and Weilai ET7 models, EDR is standard.

Although GB7258-2017 "Technical Conditions for Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation" and its revised edition clearly stated that "if equipped with an on-board video recording device that meets the requirements of the standard, it should be deemed to meet the requirements." However, some practitioners still believe that EDR's Landing will eliminate all the original on-board video recorders.

Practitioners holding this kind of view believe that EDR was initiated by the regulatory authorities and can be used as evidence in future accident determinations. The current driving recorders have appeared in many cases at home and abroad that cannot be used as evidence. Therefore, Once EDR is promoted, the living space of the current travel recorder can be said to be very small.

An electronic enthusiast reporter survey found that European countries, including Germany, Belgium, and Portugal, basically ban dash cams. Even if the owner of the vehicle installs it in violation of the regulations, the video cannot be used as court evidence.

However, some practitioners believe that although the data dimension of the trip recorder is relatively single, it also has its own value in China. Especially in dealing with uncivilized behaviors such as bumping porcelain and gas, it is difficult to define responsibility solely by EDR. However, the on-board video recorder needs to meet the new regulations to form a parallel track with EDR.
Who will benefit from hundreds of billions of tracks?
Under the guidance of various policies, it is the general trend for EDR to form a new auto parts track. Domestic practitioners must still remember the changes in the industry after the previous ETC policy. From the perspective of volume, EDR will form a thousand 100 million class track.

This can be deduced by data. At present, the price of an EDR module in the international market is about 6,000 US dollars, which is equivalent to about 40,000 RMB. The domestic price will be relatively lower, between 5,000 yuan and 100 million yuan. According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, although China's passenger car sales in 2020 fell by 6.0% year-on-year, it still reached 2017.8 million. After the two data are multiplied, the market value of the EDR market of 100 billion can be calculated.

There are still obstacles to the implementation of the policy
We can clearly see the EDR 100 billion-level track through simple data calculations, but there are still many problems to be solved in realizing the industry's potential. The first is the issue of data permissions. Although the final data is that the OEMs and users have the permissions to extract, the automotive industry chain has multiple levels. The automotive industry needs to check data security issues throughout the entire process, and clear boundaries must be drawn between hardware and software. This is a challenge, but also a business opportunity.

At the same time, for users, there will also be problems with the acceptance of privacy. Although Europe and Japan have formulated relevant EDR regulations with reference to the United States, they have not enforced them. The domestic market ultimately depends on the degree of toughness of the policy. More importantly, the emergence of EDR not only increases the cost of the original car body, but also users who want to read data also have to pay.
